Opportunity – PhD in Urban Studies at Macquarie

21 Feb

Please circulate this opportunity among potential PhD students interested in Urban Studies. The PhD are offered by Macquarie University. The closing date for applications is 1 March. The scholarship is open to domestic students only.

A full-time Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarship (MQRES) is available for a suitably qualified PhD candidate in the Department of Environment and Geography. It is associated with a successful Discovery grant from the Australian Research Council (DP130100582) awarded to Dr Kristian Ruming with Dr Kathy Mee and Prof Pauline McGuirk (University of Newcastle) for a project entitled: “Building a more sustainable city: official and everyday practices of regeneration”.
This project will explore urban regeneration at a city-wide scale, by investigating how the urban fabric is changed both by official large-scale regeneration projects and by the everyday practices of households. Focusing on the Lower Hunter Region, the research will address critical gaps in understandings of how cities can be regenerated and how to mobilise transitions to urban sustainability. To date there have been no city-wide studies of the ways official, area-based regeneration initiatives interact with the changing everyday practices of households to reshape the city. The project is the first to investigate city-wide regeneration as the product of complex assemblages of locations, processes policies and actors. The successful applicant will be expected to undertake research within the scope of this project and will be required to enrol as soon as possible in 2013.

Applications are sought from suitably qualified candidates with at least a First Class Honours degree or a Masters by Research degree in human geography, urban planning or policy, urban sociology or related disciplines. Additional skills that would benefit the research may include experience with interviews, questionnaires, policy analysis or GIS.

For further information and inquiries in the first instance, please contact Dr Kristian Ruming.
